Overview

Dr Steve Freeman, MBChB, DipObst, FRACGP, GradCertSpMed

Born in Melbourne, Dr Freeman was raised in South Africa and completed his medical training at the University of Cape Town.  It was while finishing studies at UCT that Dr Freeman had his first sports medicine job, and has continued to be involved in sports and exercise medicine ever since. Following his internship and some additional post-graduate work and study, Dr Freeman moved to Botswana, where he was involved in hospital work for a couple of years before establishing a general practice facility.  During this time, Dr Freeman was also involved with sports medicine, emergency medicine and aeromedical evacuation work.  Moving back to Australia with his family to pursue further post-graduate study, Dr Freeman spent 3 years in Tumut as a GP and Visiting Medical Officer at the local district hospital before moving to Sydney to gain further training and experience in sports and exercise medicine.  Following 10 years in Sydney as a GP Sports Doctor - working with a variety of different amateur and professional sports, and with sports participants of different ages and abilities - Dr Freeman moved to Canberra. Currently, he is the team doctor for the Brumbies Super Rugby team and the Chief Medical Officer for ACT and Southern Inland Rugby Union, together with part-time work in a multidisciplinary sports medicine centre and regular assisting with elective orthopaedic surgery.  Dr Freeman is also a World Rugby Medical Trainer - teaching pre-hospital emergency medicine courses to medical and allied health personnel involved in sports cover.
