Richard has a long and varied career in psychological research and practice.  Originally qualifying through an honours degree where he specialised in Organisational Psychology, Richard went on to develop an interest in Child Development and Education.  During this period he published research on developmental trends in intersensory integration and completed a Diploma of Teaching.  This research also formed the basis of his M.A. (Psychology) award.  Following this period of research Richard worked for Education Queensland as a Teacher Seconded to Guidance Duties and later for fourteen years as a Psychologist in a clinical counselling role with Queensland’s Department of Children’s Services.

In the late 1980’s Richard began intense study of the work of John Bowlby and colleagues whose work on Attachment Theory offers a profound, fundamental and comprehensive understanding of human behaviour.  As a result of this Richard returned part-time to formal study in 1993 and completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2002.  Richard’s doctoral work used Attachment Theory as a lens for studying the transition to first-time parenthood and led to publications in prestigious journals and to the book “Becoming Parents” published by Cambridge University Press in 2002.

In 1997, Richard was employed by Education Queensland as a Community Advisor working with behaviour and adjustment issues in schools.  Richard still performs this role on a part-time basis.  Since 2010, Richard has been working with KCPSYCH on a part-time basis to offer his knowledge and skill in the private sector.

Richard has always combined his research interests with parallel clinical practice and has been fortunate over the years to work closely with some outstanding clinicians such as Professors Tony Attwood, Matthew Sanders, Mark Dadds, and Patricia Noller.  His approach is always tailored to his clients’ needs but is generally client-centred, and focuses on helping clients create a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.  In his work he uses a mixture of contemporary methodologies such as cognitive-behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, narrative therapy, schema-therapy and whatever can assist the client.
