Hello there, and welcome. First, the 'official stuff. I have completed a PhD in Psychology and have over 25 years in the psychology field across a broad range of areas including teaching, research, and counselling. I have spent the last 11 years working both full- and part-time in the counselling field; working with adults, children/teens, couples and families.
My approach to counselling is one of mentor / coach. I believe that you are the one who knows your life best; and I am here to help you get the best out of your life. Sometimes that’s going to be nurturing and supporting you - sometimes it might be a bit of tough love as you work through the ‘hard stuff’. I believe in treating people with love and concern - but don’t think that doesn’t mean sometimes we won’t laugh. If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that even in our darkest times, we may find something to laugh about (even if it’s just a sneaky smile to begin with).
Psychologists are not people who ‘have it all together’ or whose lives are perfect. We simply have some knowledge, tools and strategies that may help you to navigate this thing we call life. I have lived through the teen years (both personally and now as a mum of two), I’ve been married (and divorced), I’ve lost love ones, I’ve cared for family members with both physical and mental health issues. I’ve died in a carpark (and again in my living room 10 years later) - and I’ve come out the other side. (There’ll be a blog post about that if you care to read the whole story - and yes there will be a bit of black humour in those stories!).
I believe in developing a relationship between myself and clients where I am one of mentor / collaborator / guide. If we don’t ‘click’, I’ll help you to find a new counsellor with whom you can work. Therapy is a process; you rarely find a ‘fix’ after one session - but with the right tools, you can put yourself on a path that is much brighter and hopeful.
If my approach to counselling is one that you can relate to - let's chat, or simply head to the bookings page and make an appointment.
