“I always knew that I wanted to be in the business of helping people, whether that be from volunteering, working in healthcare or even teaching. I had a keen interest in the human body and the power of movement and found it incredible that pain and pathology could be cured with nothing other than healing hands! I think my true passion for physiotherapy developed when studying in university and learning just how amazing (and complex) the human body could be.”

Though he was born in Canada, Richard and his family moved to Perth when he was just one year old, leading him to complete his physiotherapy degree at Curtin University, graduating in 2011.

A true “people person”, Richard loves to talk to people and learn about their lives. “I value people who value people and I love that through being a physiotherapist I can help others on a day-to-day basis. I like that I can educate and empower those who are struggling in pain and that my knowledge can be of assistance. I love that I can use a diverse and varied set of skills everyday including communication, manual therapy and Pilates and specific exercise prescription.”

He finds it fascinating that manual therapy can be used so broadly and in different ways to help people and thinks it is such a critical part of a healing experience.

He has a keen interest in assessing and treating spinal pain – lower back pain and neck pain and likes that these conditions can sometimes be complex, require outside of the box thinking and most often than not, involve a combination of his two greatest physiotherapy joys – manual therapy and Pilates/exercise. He also enjoys treating shoulder pain and understanding its surrounding pathologies.

Outside of work Richard likes to be outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air, either jogging along the river or just enjoying a summer picnic! He also loves to cook (and even more so to eat) and often on a weekend, you catch him in the kitchen trying out new recipes, whipping up a cake or baking bread! He will happily spend the whole day making delicious treats and in a truly dedicated form and as a labour of love, his longest recipe once took three days!
