Our consultations are longer than average so we have time to listen carefully to patients and discuss treatment options. We always consider non-surgical solutions, and take pride in caring for local, regional, rural and remote patients.
Our highly trained and experienced practitioners have a commitment to quality of life and functionality beyond short term outcomes. Our areas of expertise include:
Appointments are allocated to clinical urgency, which is why we ask to see patient referrals up front, and routinely accept urgent bookings.
What is direct video nasolaryngoscopy?
Many of our patients require a direct video nasolaryngoscopy. This is a minor procedure which gives us a magnified, high definition, live action view of your nose, throat and larynx. A clinician puts a flexible tube combining a light and video camera into one of your nostrils while you’re sitting upright in a chair. Local anaesthetic is sprayed in your nose to numb before we pass the scope. You may feel the tube moving around. It should not hurt or be uncomfortable. The video camera is linked to a screen and the examination is recorded so you and your doctor can look at the images together.
All Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgeons perform nasolaryngoscopies to examine patients but our practice is one of the very few in Australia which uses videoscopes. The great advantage of videscopes over standard flexible telescopes is that they provide a superior (4K) magnified image on a wide screen. The videos we record during your consultations are saved to your medical record used to track your progress following treatment. A/Prof Gallagher originally used fibreoptic telescopes in his practice but changed over to video in 2013. He was the first surgeon in Australia to do so. This was because he recognised that the superior image offered by video significantly improves the doctor's ability to identify pre-cancerous and cancerous changes in the lining of the throat and voicebox.
