As well as working as a GP myself, I am contracted to provide a vasectomy service at several clinics. This means that I am doing a lot of vasectomies and can offer you the assurance of my experience and professional approach. The primary difference compared to the conventional vasectomy is that the vas deferens is controlled and grasped by the surgeon in a less traumatic manner. This results in less pain and fewer postoperative complications. We combine the advantages of both no scalpel and open ended techniques. The No-Scalpel vasectomy is a technique used to do the vasectomy through one single puncture. The puncture is made in the scrotum and requires no suturing or stitches as a specially designed tool is used to gently stretch a small opening. Healing is quicker and faster with minimal bruising and discomfort. The open ended technique is just as effective and does not lead to a higher failure rate. Most vasectomy procedures only require about an hour for the appointment, but it’s a good idea to take things easy for a day or two. You might want to take a couple of days off work, especially if your work is very physical. You can drive home after your procedure if you have had a local anaesthetic. If you have IV sedation or a general anaesthetic you should arrange for someone to collect you as you cannot drive until the next day. You must be well and healthy on the day of the operation and wash around the area for three days before using Gamophen soap (purchased from any Pharmacy). Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory medication, and fish oil for 7 days before or after the operation as they thin the blood.Dr Julian Fox
