He then completed a further 18 months of fellowship training; six months with the Canberra Orthopaedic Group in hip and knee replacement and reconstruction, and then 12 months in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, and hip arthroscopy at the London Health Sciences Centre, University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Dr Burns is currently a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Canberra Specialist Surgical Centre and Calvary John James Hospital; as well as The Canberra Hospital and Calvary Public Hospital.
