Dr Mark Hands graduated with honours in 1979 from The University of Western Australia and was awarded the AMA Gold Prize (dux in final year Medicine). He trained in cardiology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and subsequently at the Brigham Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston (1986-88).
Since completing his cardiology training in 1988 he has been in private practice at Western Cardiology, where he has been chairman since 1992). Dr Hands is an Emeritus Consultant Cardiologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) and a Clinical Associate Professor in Cardiology at The University of Western Australia.
In addition to general cardiology and echocardiography, his special interests include investigation and treatment of acute and chronic ischaemic heart disease.
As an interventional cardiologist his procedural skills include:
- Coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting in stable angina and in acute coronary syndromes of unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction via radial and femoral artery approaches.
- Cardiac pacing.
- Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale.
- His private practice with Western Cardiology includes consulting at St John of God Hospital, Subiaco (SJOGHS), Duncraig and Busselton. Privately insured inpatients are managed at SJOGHS and uninsured inpatients at SCGH.
Dr Hands is a Fellow of the Royal Australia College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, member of the Australian Medical Association and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
