The hospital resident year (residency) or PGY2

Terms completed in this year or two are generally selected by the junior doctor and are tailored toward their preferred eventual specialty.

This means a candidate interested in surgical training will usually select a range of relevant surgical and critical care specialties during this time. It is during these years that junior doctors select and apply for specialty training programmes.
