The RCPA Training Program

It takes 5 years to complete the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia’s Fellowship training program and this can be completed in one of a number of pathology disciplines.

Training and Fellowship examination is available in the following pathology disciplines.

To specialise in one of these disciplines 4 of the 5 years of approved laboratory training must be in that area:

  • Anatomical Pathology
  • Chemical Pathology
  • Clinical Pathology
  • Forensic Pathology
  • General Pathology
  • Genetics
  • Haematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Oral Pathology (for Fellowship of the Faculty of Oral Pathology)

Joint training programs supervised by a Joint Specialist Advisory Committee (JSAC) with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) are available in:

  • Endocrinology / Chemical Pathology
  • Infectious Diseases / Microbiology
  • Haematology
  • Immunology

Post-Fellowship diplomas are offered in:

  • Cytopathology
  • Molecular Pathology
  • Forensic Pathology
  • And a special Diploma in Forensic Medicine for non-Fellows

Research

Trainees are encouraged to spend up to one year of their training undertaking research

The Examination Process

  1. Basic Pathological Sciences Examination
    1. The examination may be taken before commencement of training. The examination is open to any intern, medical or dental student in their final year as well as registered trainees.
  2. Discipline specialty Part I:
    1. This is usually taken in the third year of training
    2. Written, oral and practical components
  3. Discipline specialty Part II:
    1. This is usually taken in the fifth or final year of training
    2. Written, oral and practical components
