The RANZCOG Training Program

The Royal Australian and New Zealand college of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists training program is a 6 year structured post-graduate program which leads first to certification as a Member (MRANZCOG) of the College and then to certification as a Fellow of the College (FRANZCOG). Fellowship of the RANZCOG is the only post-graduate qualification which leads to recognition as a specialist obstetrician / gynaecologist in Australia or New Zealand.

  1. 4 year Integrated Training Program (ITP)
    1. Rotation through 3 different hospitals with 12 months in a tertiary hospital and 6 months in a rural hospital
    2. Logged clinical work in obstetrics and gynaecology resulting in attainment of prescribed competency levels in specified procedures
    3. Experience in gynaecological oncology
    4. Regular Training Supervisor Assessments
    5. Basic Surgical Skills Workshop
    6. Neonatal resuscitation training
    7. In-hospital Clinical Assessment (IHCA) modules
    8. Surgical Procedures Competency Assessment
    9. Communication Skills Workshop
    10. Research Project
    11. MRANZCOG Written and Oral Examinations
  2. 2 year Elective Program (EP) is not prescribed by the College. It may include:
    1. Further training in operative obstetrics and gynaecology
    2. Training in provincial / rural posts
    3. Research leading to a post-graduate degree
    4. Commencement of subspecialty training

RANZCOG Subspecialty Training Programs

Subspecialty certification in one of the five subspecialty areas offered requires a further three years training.

Subspecialty training can commence after being awarded Fellowship (FRANZCOG) or when a trainee has completed Membership requirements and is in the last one or two years of Fellowship training.

The Subspecialty programs are:

  • CGO – Certification in Gynaecological Oncology
  • COGU – Certification in Obstetrical and Gynaecological Ultrasound
  • CMFM – Certification in Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • CREI – Certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
  • CU – Certification in Urogynaecology
