FRACDS Training Program

Basic Surgical Training

A minimum of two years Basic Surgical Training is completed next.

  1. BST Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinical year spent in a hospital post accredited for basic and surgical training by the RACDS
  2. BST Surgery in General clinical year at a University Teaching Hospital preferably in related disciplines such as ENT surgery, plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology or general surgery.
  3. Designated BST Courses
    1. Australian and New Zealand Surgical Skills Education and Training (ASSET)
    2. Early Management of Severe Trauma course (EMST)
    3. Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient course (CCrISP)
  4. Completion of Logbook / Learning Portfolio
  5. Successful completion of Formative Assessment Reports
  6. Primary Examination of the RACDS

Advanced Surgical Training

Advanced Surgical Training for the RACDS takes a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years.

  1. Successful completion of a minimum of 36 months of advanced Surgical Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  2. Successful completion of Formative Assessment Reports
  3. Completion of Logbook / Learning Portfolio
  4. A Research Project of up to one year may be undertaken
  5. Clinical training Assessment
    1. Case Presentation and Discussion
    2. Assessment of Operative Process
  6. Final RACDS Examination (a and one of b, c, or d)
    1. General Dentistry
    2. Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology
    3. Restorative Dentistry and Periodontics
    4. Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic
