Phosphate (P) is a blood test - it requires a few mililitres of blood from a vein.
A mild decrease in the blood level of phosphate is relatively common, and usually of no clinical significance. The blood level does not necessarily reflect body stores of phosphate in the cells and bones. Severe hypophosphataemia is rare, and may cause muscular weakness, bone pain, or altered mental state (confusion, disorientation).
Laboratories will usually quote their own reference range for serum Phosphate (P) levels. A low phosphate result is usually of little significance if mild; more pronounced deficiency may be due to excessive use of antacids, lack of vitamin D, malabsorption, hyperparathyroidism (overactive parathyroid glands)or the refeeding syndrome in malnourished individuals.
